How Often Should You Have Your Septic Tank Pumped?

The short answer is that a "typical" family of four on a septic system with a 1,000 gallon tank should have the tank pumped about once every two (2) to three (3) years.

However, there are many factors that could affect the time between pump outs, such as:

1. Garbage disposal usage could add significantly to the build-up of solids in your tank.

2. Grease when poured down the drains will harden in the tank and clog the inlet or the outlet.

3. Household chemicals should not be poured into drains. They could destroy the "good" bacteria in your septic tank that help purify the sewage.
